GOVERNMENT OF NWFP

NWFP is land-locked. That means it can only be reached by air or land. The airport in Peshawar has flights incoming from Dubai. However, major international airports are located in other cities of the country with connections made to cities in the frontier. The most frequently used entry point is by road from Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan. Peshawar is only a three hour drive from Islamabad, or a half hour flight. Air travel is also possible through Lahore and Karachi.

By Air

More than 20 international airlines fly into Pakistan from over 40 countries. Most international flights arrive in Karachi or Islamabad-Rawalpindi, but a few go to Lahore or Peshawar. You can change travelers' checks and foreign money at these airports. There are taxis and public buses from the airport to the city centers. You should bargain with the taxi driver and agree on a fare before leaving with him. There is also the option of the rickshaw; it is much less expensive, but only for light travelers.

By Land

From China: The Khunjerab Pass border crossing is open from 1 May to 31 October for tours and from 1 May to 30 November for individual travelers.

From India: The border at Wagah, near Lahore, is open only a few days each month due to the unrest in the Indian Punjab. India and Pakistan have agreed to open the railway line from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, to Hyderabad in Sind, but this is not running yet.

From Iran: The border is open only at Taftan, from where it is a 15 to 24 hour bus ride to Quetta in Baluchistan.

From Afghanistan: Afghanistan is closed to foreigner because of national troubles. There are two entry points to Pakistan from Afghanistan - from Kabul via Torkham and the Khyber Pass, and from Kandahar via Chaman to the Khojak Pass - but both are closed except to local traffic and authorized refugees.
