The primary objective of this convention was to strengthen peace lobbies on both sides of the border and to build a joint peace movement in the subcontinent.
The 4th Joint convention of Pakistan-India Peoples’ Forum for Peace and Democracy was held at Peshawar, Pakistan on 21 and 22 November, 1998. About 170 delegates from India and over 250 delegates from Pakistan participated in the Peshawar convention.
Following resolutions were passed at the convention that were presented at a Press conference held on the conclusion of the convention. The Press conference was jointly addressed by Admiral (Retd) Ramdas, Mr. I. A. Rehman, Mr. Pattan Das and Khawaja Waseem. The resolutions were called Peshawar Declaration.
A strong resolution condemning the India-Pak nuclear tests carried out in May 1998 was passed. The resolution demanded an end to the nuclear arms race between the two countries.
Resolution on Kashmir demanded settlement of the Kashmir issue on an urgent basis through peaceful means in accordance with the wishes of the people of Kashmir. It was also resolved that any type of terrorism in Kashmir either state sponsored or cross border must cease from with.
Resolution urging both countries to pullout their forces from Siachin. Resolution demanding settlement of Wullar Barrage dispute in accordance with the Indus Basin Treaty.
Resolution demanding substantial reduction in defence expenditures of both countries.
