Preamble

Swiss Aid was established in 1988 and Professor Batin Shah Safi who was Director of Afghan Refugee Education in early eighties becomes the Chairmen and founder member of this organization. Professor Batin Shah Safi with his heartfelt endeavor took it this team to a high profile, internationally reputed organization.

To expand and excel in international development Swiss Aid becomes SWISS AID SYNDICATE in association with JUST PEACE Inc and RERSEARCH ASIA Consultants. An independent international Board for transparent recital governs the Syndicate.

Swiss Aid Syndicate executed over 42.187 $ projects and activities in the last 16 years in development of socio-economic and education sector for Afghans in Pakistan and Afghanistan as well. 

Swiss Aid Syndicate was one of the first organizations, which started working developing Afghanistan from Pakistani soil, and is also operational inside Afghanistan from the last 16 years. The organization validates its conception that socio-economic and educational development is possible even during the war period with systematic approach and teamwork. 

The Organization was also a close working partner with some other International organizations such as UNHCR, GTZ, Social Welfare Cell, Commissionerate Afghan Refugees, SOS PG Belgium, UNESCO, United States Institute for Peace (USIP), Swiss Development Cooperation, Erica Niggler Foundation, eastern Mennonite University VA, USA, International Organization for Migration (IOM), Netherlands Refugees Foundation, UNHCR.

Professor Batin Shah Safi as a team leader excel in executing Education, Health education, Technical Education, training, Infrastructure, projects. Now his team also includes expert of Community Development, Community Participation, institutional & Organizational development, Restorative Justice and Peace.

Swiss Aid in association with Just Peace International Inc. Georgia USA. and Research Asia Consultants has started  joint efforts for Justice & Peace through conflict transformation methods in order to protect and promote constructive peace by assisting ,advocacy and empowering the grass roots communities, organizations, governments and civil society to enable them to allow judicious, sustainable and productive interaction to realize maximum human potential in an environment of peace, justice and dignity.

Swiss Aid Syndicate at present has staffing of over 220 personals with four offices Two in Peshawar and each in Jalalabad and Kabul and a colossal group of associate consultants.

The operational activities at presents are expanded in Peshawar, Parachinar, Wziristan, Bajure, Swabi, Swat, Baluchistan, Kabul, Jalalabad, Nengarhar, Logar, Ghazni, Parwan and so on.

 

Objectives

 

  • To promote self reliance and culture of peace by educating, training, facilitation and adaptation of innovative strategies to be functionally executed by individuals, groups and communities by using indigenous knowledge, expertise and resources.

 

  • To strive for the institutional and organizational development for evolution of socio-economic condition of Afghans and Afghanistan.

 

  • To revitalize the customary approaches of international development and to provide a realistic and advance forum for the developers based on indigenous experiments and comprehensive participatory researches in the field of socio- economic and communications development sector.

 

  • To deal with the issues of conflict that will help individuals and organizations to identify the conflicts and see them as an opportunity to remove and prevent injustices at the roots of relationship and structures through a deliberate focus on areas of conflict transformation, including, the fundamentals of peace building, world views, cross cultural education, restorative justice    and the spiritual traditional roots of peace building.

 

  • To design and implement, peace education through formal/informal way and means, capacity building, training programs, use of Print and electronic media for peace education, and intermediary interventions in conflict zones to support the people to exercise their fundamental right to live and grow with full human dignity and sustainable security.

 

  • To help the victims of calamities, wars and violence with rehabilitation and reconstruction programs including trauma healing and restorative justice.

 

  • To help in designing and implementation of strategies for social sector development through organizations for the poor and victim societies to enable them an opportunity to come out of the vicious cycle of poverty

 

  • To help communities at risk of poor health and victims of drug abuse and to afford the services of public health engineering including sanitation and clean drinking water supply.

 

  • To apply methods of mediation and restorative justice in the criminal justice system

 

Working Principles

 

For achieving the aims, objectives and goals of the Swiss Aid Syndicate the following shall be the working principles:-

 

  • Creating awareness, using electronic media, Motivation, involvement, training, capacity building and participation of individuals and groups in the process of peace and development.

 

  • Community based efforts and strengthening of the prevailing traditional social systems and structure by inducing modern scientific approaches to achieve the goals of sustainable development.

 

  • Forming, sponsoring, funding, training networking, coordinating and promoting developmental organizations and institutions to improve the life standards and to canvass the culture of peace.

 

  • Sharing and disseminating scientific data, project planning and system execution with all interested in the process of development.

 

  • Solving problems by educating, eliminating root causes, providing options, promoting and encouraging active participation of individual, group and communities in playing vital role in rehabilitation and sustainable evolution.

Professor Batin Shah Safi is well known personality not only in Pakistan and Afghanistan but in Switzerland as well. With over 35 years of experience and being the pioneer in the development of Afghanistan, his work would be remembered in history of Afghanistan. Most of his students also gain international repute and placed on very high positions internationally.

 Professor Safi studied in Germany and was lecturer in Kabul University. He worked for nine years in Swedish committee as director of education section. Professor Safi was member of policymaking group of Swedish committee. He wrote about twenty-five books for primary level from grade 1 to 6 in Pashto and Dari in different subjects including recent publication “Teachers’ guides and working technique”. Professor also attended various international seminars and workshops in Pakistan, Germany, France, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands, Norway and USA. At present Professor Safi is a member of Heidel Berg University of Germany. He is also known for his press conferences, public meetings, radio, and television and newspaper interviews.  

 Professor Batin Shah Safi is an intellectual, scholar, thinker and philosopher who strived all his life for the development and nation building through his concepts of tolerance and promoting culture of peace. All Afghans and Pakistanis like his never strenuous efforts and non- controversial personality. Professor Safi Represent Swiss Aid in the SAS.


Mr. Ali Gohar is the chief executive of Just Peace International Inc. He has a degree in International Relations from Quaid-E-Azam University, Pakistan. For thirteen years, worked as commissioner for the social welfare cell for Afghan refugees--a project of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). During his tenure, he sought to make public the plight of Afghan refugee street children. He wrote two Pashto plays for Pakistan Television Corporation on Drug/HIV AIDS awareness & domestic violence respectively. Recently he has completed a Master’s degree in Conflict Transformation as a Fulbright Scholar from Eastern Mennonite University Harrisonburg, Virginia in the USA. He was awarded a grant from the United States Institute for Peace (USIP) towards understanding Jirga (a community based conflict transformation institution). Mr. Gohar is the co-writer/translator of “The Little Book of Restorative Justice” in Pak-Afghan context and assisted the author of the book, Prof. Howard Zehr, Director of the Conflict Transformation Program at Eastern Mennonite University, Pioneer of Restorative justice system in North America. Mr. Gohar was also instrumental in the development of a peace story and song, i www.dreamthelight.com "In your song, I hear my voice," sung in twenty languages with USA distinguished scholar for peace, John Paul Lederach.

Askar Sahibzada is a Canadian Citizen, highly experienced social scientist, chairman of Human- Nest , consultant Research Asia and an active connoisseur in the field of development for the last 18 years. Currently doing his Doctorate in Community Development from Canada and actively involved in the field of International Development. Author of few books on management, community development & community participation and experienced in executing tripartite international development projects.

His multidisciplinary career has lead numerous projects including social welfare, primary education, formal & non-formal education, curriculum development, community development and community participation. He served for government of Pakistan, UNHCR, GTZ and CFID (Canada foundation for international development). He also served as South Asian Community Counselor in British Columbia, Canada.

 He has had considerable experience in project design, resource identification & mobilization, execution and participatory monitoring and evaluation. He got trained in Management, Social Development Moderation, Professional counseling, Gender and other related subjects from International institutes in UK, Canada, Germany and Thailand.

The Associate

Ms. Piera Cavenaghi Diroma is an Italian national from Trieste and important researcher for Research Asia. She has more then 20 years experience in education delivery with a Master degree on “Materie Letterarie” University of Trieste Italy.Presently Ms. Piera is doing her Ph. D. research in Peshawar on “The Idea of Pukhtoon Identity in XIX and XX Centuries”. Besides her work in South Asian studies she is also interested in women empowerment and gender and development in Pakistan and Afghanistan.


Nisar Mohammad Khan is holding master degree in Literature from Pakistan. He has served in Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation as Director, Controller home services, Deputy Controller world services, Director international relations department and Controller central productions. In his written work a lot of plays, musical features, Afghan refugees documentaries, feature film and melodramas goes to his credit. Regarding his work on peace he wrote twelve stage plays. His proficiency in understanding languages is evident from the fact that he can read, write and speak English, Pashto, Dari (Farsi), Punjabi, Hindko, Kashmiri, Pahari, Gojri, Hindi and Persian. He has visited USA, UK, Switzerland, India, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Malaysia and Thailand.     


Hassan Yousufzai has a master’s degree in political Science from Peshawar University and a Masters Degree in Conflict Transformation from the Eastern Mennonite University Harrisonburg VA, USA (www.emu.edu). He has also done his internship with an NGO Named Fund for Peace www.fundforpeace.org where he worked on building up a chronology of events in Pakistan and its vulnerability to conflict at different stages of history. Currently he is enrolled in a PhD program at the department of International Relations in Peshawar University with a focus on conflict analysis and prevention. As a government official in the District Management Group, he has a vast experience of interaction with communities in conflict particularly during his service as Assistant Commissioner in Matta Swat, Chitral and Assistant Political Agent in Bajaur Agency. Presently, he is a volunteer associate of Just Peace International inc.


Javaid Akhtar is working in Just Peace International as a country coordinator. He has done his Masters in Geography with urban & Regional Planning from University of Peshawar along with a Post Graduate Diploma in Rural Development and Local government. He has also completed a one-year course of International Human Rights Law, a Joint venture of University of Oslo and University of Peshawar. Mr. Javaid has a diverse professional experience since 1990 in the field of community Development .He has also an experience of working with   National and International Agencies in the capacity of a short and long term consultant in the sector of Water supply and sanitation, HIV/AID, community services programs for afghan Refugees, Health and education sectors.

Presently he is also managing a” Pakistan Polio eradication initiative project” assisted by WHO for post campaign independent monitoring in NWFP, besides capacity building programs in peace related issues.


Shahnaz Safdar has a Master in Anthropology from University of Peshawar. Her Thesis in the Department was "The Status of Women in Tribal Area". She joined the Social Welfare Cell (SWC) for Afghan Refugees Commissionerate Peshawar in 1990. Presently she is the Head of the Women Section of the Cell working in the capacity of Assistant Project Coordinator. Her main responsibilities are Assessment of the Social Economic Condition of the Afghan Women and fulfillment of their needs with the help of UN and Donor Agencies, Conducting training, Coordination with local and International NGOs working for Active Community Participation for the Afghan Women. She belongs to the Hazara Tribe of Kurram Agency. Fluent in Persian and Pashto languages, she has extensive experience of working with Afghan communities. She is working with Just Peace International as a consultant for the Women Affairs.

 SAS Team Members:

 ·        Engineer Matiullah graduated in 1975 from Institute of Poly Technique Kabul. He started his in Logar in Copper Ainak  Mine. In Afghanistan he worked as engineer in DACAAR, German Agro Action, UNICEF, ICRC, Kohinoor Foundation, Abdul Foundation and ACLU. He has lot of experience in making roads and he worked in the reconstruction in Kabul, Logar, Ghazni, Zabul, Kandahar, Konar, Laghman and Ningarhar. He is working now in water supply and boring wells. In Pakistan he has worked in education. He was director of Wahdat Islami Lycee.

 

·        Mohammad Hussain Rahimy studied in teacher training school from 1959 – 1965. Then he studied in faculty of education from 1967 – 1972. Later he worked in Ministry of Education of Afghanistan in Kabul and Ningarhar as a teacher of primary and secondary school, director of sec. school, supervisor in education department. He also worked as administrator trainer in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He attended workshop with UNESCO regarding teacher training, management and helping teaching materials, and peace. He also translated a book about educational planning and management along with other group members in UNESCO. He trained teachers for home schools in Afghanistan with the help of IOM. He worked as Teacher and director of Peshawar Science College, which was helped by SAA. In 1991 he joined SAA and worked as supervisor and Assistant Director till now.

 

·        Amer Rashid acquired his education in Peshawar right from beginning. He graduated from Government College Peshawar in 1991. Later he took his masters degree in Economics from University of Peshawar in 1993. Following his inclination towards education he successfully served as Lecturer in Economics in different renowned institutions of Peshawar. In 2000 he joined Economy and Administration College managed and organized by Swiss Aid for Afghans as Lecturer in Economics. Later from 2002 he started working in Swiss Aid’s main office situated in Peshawar as Administrator and Computer Section Organizer. He is also responsible for Technical Report writing for the organization.        

 

·        Mohammad Saddiq Iqbal graduated from Faculty of Science from Kabul University in 1972. He was a professor of Faculty of Pharmacy. In Peshawar he worked as Doctor in Hangoo German hospital and now he is director of Rehman Baba Secondary School, which is run by SAA. He is specialist in chemistry, biology and administration.

  

·        Miss Nargis Sarwari graduated from faculty of Science. She worked as a teacher and director of secondary school. She has a long experience in physics subject.

 

·        Mrs. Naseema studied in Germany and graduated from faculty of Literature. In Peshawar she is working as a teacher of Pashto language and history subject for the last many years in Malalay and Ayesha-e-Durani Secondary Schools.

 

·        Miss Noor Hayat studied in Faculty of Science in Kabul University. She is specialist in mathematics and algebra subjects. She is working as a teacher for long time in Malalay, Um-e-Salma and Ayesha-e-Durani Secondary Schools.

 

·        Mr. Sarwar Mamond studies in Institute of Poly Technique Kabul. He served as professor in the same institute. Later he studied in USSR. He worked in Afghanistan holding different posts. In Peshawar he worked as a teacher of design, English, geology, working technique, computer and administration. He has lot of experience in human rights.

 

·        Mohammad Tahir acquired master degree in mathematics from Kabul institute. He has a long experience in mathematics and administration.

 

·        Mohammad Tahir studied in faculty of science in Kabul University. He has a lot of experience in biology subject.

 

·        Mohammad Ibrahim Hamkar obtained master degree in Pashto from Islamia College Peshawar. He has a lot of experience in teaching of psychology, working technique, Pashto language and administration. He is experienced in administering conferences.

 

·        Mohammad Asif Sameem studied Dari and Arabic languages from Kabul University. He has experience in literature and poetry. He is a good teacher of Pashto, Arabic and Psychology subject. 

 

·        Abdul Baqi Hilaman Gaznawi studied from Faculty of Literature in Dari language. He has a long experience in conference, management, poetry and literature.

 

·        Mohammad Naseem Nazirzadah has long experience in administration, English teaching and computer.

 

·        Qabil Shah Wasiq graduated from Jalalabad institute from science department. In Afghanistan and in Peshawar he has a lot of experience in teaching of psychology, chemistry, administration and supervision of schools.

 

·        Prof. Amin studied Accounts and Economics from abroad. He was lecturer in Faculty of Economics and Erica Niggler College in Peshawar.

 

·        Shafiq Gul has master degree in Business Administration. He is an excellent teacher and has knowledge in computer.

 

·        Fazal-e-Tawab is a qualified psychologist. He was a good teacher in English and administration.

 

·        Alamzeb has qualification in commerce and is a good teacher of accounts and business mathematics. He served in Erica Niggler College as well.

 

·        Mrs. Nasreen has studied physics and mathematic faculty of science, Kabul university .She is   experienced and specialist in Seminars.                              

 

·        Miss Zarmina graduated from faculty of literature geography social study deportment. She has lot of experience in geography in show slides.
